Dia. D. A 1:3 pond should be built more or less square. If small, oblong ponds are built, the axis should be parallel to the wind to get aeration benefits from the wind action. The reverse is true where long, oblong ponds are built, as wave action is likely to cause erosion problems on the wind-ward side of the pond.

A catch basin should be constructed at the drainpipe, as it may be necessary at times to completely drain the pond to rid it of trash fish or parasites. The catch basin facilitates that chore.
